A date, as said by Elder Dallin H. Oaks, is something that is planned, paid for, and paired off. This can not be accomplished if there is a spontaneous hang out. By having these three factors it ties into the proclamation and allows young men to get ready for marriage.
The proclamation says, "By divine design, father are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families." Preparation is related to preside, paid for is related to provide, and paired off is related to protection.

What makes me different?
Gender differences is something that I feel is always being discussed. In class we spent quite a chunk of time going over gender differences and why they are so important. Yes, they are important. There is a reason that God created Men and Women, and the differences between them are crucial.
In, "The Family: A Proclamation to the World" it states, "All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose." It is no mistake that there are male and female on the earth today. As said in the proclamation, it is ESSENTIAL.
There are differences between male and female, and it lists those in the proclamation too. Males are to Preside, Provide, and Protect. And for most this just comes by nature. Females are to nurture. And just like males, for most this comes by design. However, these responsibilities are not set in stone, a women can just as well provide for a family and a man can just as well nurture children. Different situations call for different things.
This is a very important topic to know about especially in dealing with families and even in your own family. This can cause a lot of disagreements, but if handled right can be reasoned out.

Stucture
Structure in a family is so important. In class we did an exercise, 3 people volunteered to go up to the front of the class and act out a situation. In the situation they had to act out their family structure was not in the best shape. During the exercise I started to think of my family, not in a bad way! I grew up with a family that was very close, but it made me start thinking about things that could have possibly been better. I by any means did not grow up in a perfect home but I feel like for the most part we, as a family, had it together.
Structure can make such a big difference in a family, if you feel like you have to take sides and go against someone in your family I can see how that can cause problems within the family. I know that as I am getting closer and closer to having a family of my own I need to pay more attention to things like this so I will be able to be the best mother I can be and so that I can let my children know that I love them.

1st day of class
In class Brother Williams said a quote that went like this, "People tend to learn deeply when they have questions that are important, intriguing, and just plain beautiful." I do not remember who said this quote, but it really stood out to me. When asking a question on any aspect of life the question has to be thought out.
To me this quote means that questions that I ask should come from the heart and I need to have the desire to learn. We have all heard the quote, "There are no stupid questions". I to some extent I believe this, but sometimes I hear questions asked that should just not be asked. If there is the true desire to learn the questions that are asked will have some meaning. I looked up question in the dictionary and the definition that stood out to me the most was, "a problem for discussion or under discussion; a matter for investigation." A question should not be asked to just get one answer, but instead it should be asked to cause a discussion.
